Journal Overview

The International Journal of Atheist Thought and Belief (IJATB) is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary academic journal dedicated to the scholarly study of atheism, non-belief, secular thought, humanism, naturalism, and related intellectual and cultural worldviews. The journal provides an international platform for researchers, academics, philosophers, historians, sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, scholars of religion, political scientists, and other researchers to publish original research, theoretical analyses, empirical studies, historical investigations, and critical perspectives on atheism and non-religious thought.

Atheism and non-belief represent important subjects within contemporary philosophy, religious studies, sociology, psychology, history, anthropology, and cultural studies. Scholarly research increasingly recognizes that atheism cannot be understood solely as the absence or rejection of belief in God or gods; it may also intersect with identity, ethics, meaning, politics, science, culture, socialization, and forms of secular or humanist life. Research has also demonstrated considerable diversity among atheist and non-religious populations and emphasizes the importance of studying these phenomena across different societies and cultural contexts.

The journal seeks to encourage rigorous and open scholarly inquiry into the intellectual foundations, historical development, social expressions, psychological dimensions, cultural significance, and contemporary manifestations of atheism and non-religious worldviews. It welcomes research examining both atheistic and religious perspectives where such comparison contributes to a deeper understanding of belief, unbelief, worldview formation, and secularization.

Particular emphasis is placed on research addressing philosophical arguments concerning the existence of God, epistemology, naturalism, secular ethics, meaning and purpose, the relationship between science and religion, secularization, atheist identities, humanism, non-religion, and the social and political dimensions of atheism.

The International Journal of Atheist Thought and Belief is committed to intellectual openness and scholarly neutrality. It does not require authors or reviewers to hold any particular religious or non-religious position. Instead, it encourages evidence-based, logically rigorous, respectful, and academically independent examination of competing perspectives.
